A suitable place for camping should be comfortable, with enough space to set up tents and cook, a good view and easy access to water.
Some areas possess all these conditions but it is a compromise to choose a camping place. Mountain climbers might pass an appropriate place and choose elsewhere to be close to the peak. Wind is a significant issue in finding a camping place, and campers learn practically to shelter in areas which are immune to it. A camping place on a ridge will be exposed to severe wind. A crack on the ridge or a little below it will be windy too. In most places wind blows in a special direction. Mountain winds are powerful. The wind blowing towards the top of the steep in the afternoon might change direction at night and blow in a cold and heavy way down from above the snowline .When the atmosphere is stable, cold air, which is heavier than warm, falls and flows into valleys. As a result there is often cold weather or a cold breeze in plains and river basins. Around rivers or lakes it is a few degrees colder at night than on nearby heights. Watch out for wind direction when setting up. The best place is often sheltering under the trees or rocks that don’t take winds.
Placing the tent’s door in the direction of wind causes its expansion and minimizes the tent’s dangling.
When it’s stormy, set up a tent so that wind will hit it at the back, and if you open it, rain and snow won’t get in. Consider how a change in temperature would affect a possible camping place. For instance, avoid a camp in canyons and beside riverbeds, since they can flood as a result of a storm or downpour. If you set up a tent by the river, be careful since the water level might come up. In winter or at high altitude, make sure not to pitch a tent in the path of an avalanche. Don’t leave a trace behind: an important issue to consider is not to affect nature when camping. An old saying: "Leave only footprints; take only photographs."
The more campers visit a place, the more vulnerable it becomes and therefore you should be more watchful. Here are a few tips on finding a camping place:
These tips are chosen so that nature suffers less.
Best place: a stable spot with quite crushed, stiff snow
Good place: rocks, flat, sandy and soil areas without grass in deep forests
Inappropriate place: fields covered by grass, areas in dense vegetation above the tree line
Worst place: places near lakes and rivers
